Twoleaf Toothwort (Cardamine diphylla) (Michaux, 1803)

 

Synonyms: Dentaria diphylla, Dentaria bifolia, Dentaria incisa, broadleaf toothwort, crinkle root, pepper root, twin-leaved toothwort

 

 

Cardamine diphylla is found in most of eastern North America, from Ontario and Quebec south to Arkansas and Georgia. It grows in moist deciduous and mixed forests, river banks, ravines, cliffs, and sometimes in fields; 50-1,300 m. Perennial herb; the stem is erect, up to 30 cm in height, unbranched, usually glabrous. The leaves are 3-foliolate, 8-22 cm; the margins coarsely toothed. Flowers with 4 white petals (rarely pink or purple). Fruits linear-lanceolate. Flowering from April through early June.
